AS Watson Group’s journey began in Guangdong Province, Chinese Mainland, with the establishment of the Canton Dispensary , which offered free Western medicine and medical services to those in need. Although records from that time are limited, this is recognised as the earliest origin of AS Watson Group
1841
AS Watson Group was founded in 1841 as the Hong Kong Dispensary , with its first store (then a simple thatched hut) located at “Possession Point” in Sheung Wan, now known as Possession Street. As the first dispensary in Hong Kong to offer Western medicine, it laid a strong foundation for our enduring commitment to health, wellbeing, and customer care

Dr. Thomas Boswell Watson arrives Hong Kong and joins The Hong Kong Dispensary
1858
1869
The Hong Kong Dispensary is appointed the chemist of the Hong Kong Governor and the Duke of Edinburgh
1871
The Hong Kong Dispensary begins trading under the name AS Watson & Company
1880s
AS Watson sets up scholarship to support local medical school. Dr. Sun Yat-sen is admitted to Hong Kong College of Medicine which is under Alice Memorial Hospital, and graduated with first place. Due to his excellent medical skills and outstanding results, he becomes one of the beneficiaries of the scholarship scheme

The Canton Dispensary, forerunner of AS Watson, operated in Manila, the Philippines from the 1883 to 1912 at the old original chinatown on Escolta Road
1886
AS Watson becomes the fifteenth company registered on Hong Kong Company Registry
